Cuddledown meets Apple Distinguished Program participants

Congratulations to the “Green Room Project” of Kennebunk Middle School in Maine, recently named an “Apple Distinguished Program” for the second consecutive year! This prestigious designation is given to just 50 schools around the U.S., recognizing them for their innovative use of technology in the classroom.

Students involved with the “Green Room Project” have been redesigning rooms at the Nonantum resort in Kennebunkport, Maine. As described in the York County Coast Star, thirteen rooms will be redesigned by the end of this year. The eighth grade students involved with the program use technology to create podcasts for the hotel’s website and brochures for the rooms, which can then be viewed by guests of the resort.

In addition, the students visit local businesses to shop for room furnishings, and to see how goods are manufactured. They recently visited Cuddledown to learn about the business and manufacturing process, which art educator Mary McCarthy described as “a real education for us art-wise as well as culturally.”

We’re excited to have met with this talented group, and we wish them continued success!

Sweet and sustainable Valentine’s Day ideas!

Stumped about how to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year? Instead of giving your sweetie a colossal box of chocolates (though certainly not a bad gift!), why not try something more original – and eco-friendly? We thought we’d share a few sustainable ideas courtesy of Practically Green that are perfect for even the pickiest Valentine!

Go local If you’re planning on enjoying a special Valentine’s Day dinner, why not try a local, sustainable restaurant? We’re so fortunate to have a wide range of dining options here in Portland, from freshly made vegan fare, to homemade pasta (and lobster, of course!). If you’re not sure where to look in your town, Practically Green recommends checking out the Green Restaurant Association’s Dine Green Restaurant directory. There you’ll find restaurants that are Certified Green and committed to sustainability.

Buy fair trade treats If you’re set on going the chocolate route, consider giving a bar of organic or fair trade chocolate. The advantages? Cacao from organic chocolate was grown without the use of chemicals or fertilizers, meaning that your chocolate is all-natural. Plus, fair trade chocolate was produced ethically, and the farmers who raised the cacao were paid fair wages. Fair trade and organic chocolate can be found just about anywhere, too, so if you’re still searching for a gift, just head to the grocery store!

Give a handcrafted gift Whether you’re making a present yourself (always the best kind of gift!) or purchasing from local artisans, opting for handmade goods is a wonderful idea. The website treehugger.com recommends checking out Main Street Revolution, a site that showcases products from “local entrepreneurs with handmade goods.”

Tell us, how are you going green this Valentine’s Day?

Super Bowl fun at Cuddledown!

Superbowl 2012Of course, being in Maine, Cuddledown is full of die-hard Patriots fans.  That’s not to say that we don’t have a few folks rooting for the Giants as well.  All things considered, we’ve been fairly restrained – no pillow fights allowed!

Since it’s a question that’s hotly debated by some of our staff – we thought we’d put it out there:  Tom Brady’s hair – long or short – discuss!

Even if you’re not into the game, you can definitely take advantage of some of our sales that will end soon!  Make your bed more comfy with a soft, cozy Cuddledown comforter or mattress pad or topper.  Our staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have, whether you’re shopping online or on the phone!

Either way – enjoy the weekend – we know we will (when the Pats win of course!)  :)
