It’s that time of year again! We’re starting to think about making our homes a little cozier for the holidays, and what better place to start than with the guest bedroom. If you’re a little strapped for time (who isn’t?) but want to perk up a tired guest bed, why not add …
Cuddledown Extra Thick Waterproof Comfort Pad
A mattress pad! Although they aren’t the most glamorous element of a top-notch bed, mattress pads are essential in transforming a comfy bed into one that you’ll never want to leave. Not sure which mattress pad to choose? A couple of our favorites are the Ultimate Comfort Mattress Pad (with an average of 4.8/5 stars in 69 reviews) and the Plush Wool Fleece Pad that’s both cushiony and moisture wicking. For more help picking the perfect mattress pad, our article on How to Choose the Perfect Mattress Pad and mattress pad video are handy resources.
We’ll have more tips for getting your guest bedroom in tip-top shape soon – stay tuned!

Dempsey Challenge 2012 participants
There is still time to sign up for the Dempsey Challenge, taking place during Columbus Day weekend! Celebrating its fifth year anniversary, the Dempsey Challenge is a run/walk/cycle fundraiser for the The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in Lewiston, Maine.
Founder Patrick Dempsey (of “Grey’s Anatomy” fame) created the Cancer Center for Hope & Healing after his mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The center provides counseling, integrative medicine, and support for patients, as well as resources for families and loved ones. This event is their major fundraiser, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Dempsey Center.
Cuddledown employees have participated in the Challenge since it began, and this event is one that we hold close to our heart. If you’d like to support the wonderful work of the The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing, please visit their website for more information or to make a donation. And, for anyone participating in the Challenge next weekend, good luck!!

Happy National Dog Day!
We’re celebrating our furry friends today! (That’s my four-legged best friend Toby, pictured above!) Started in 2004, National Dog Day brings attention to the number of adoptable shelter pets looking for good homes. If you’re looking to adopt a pet, Petfinder.com and the ASPCA are great resources for finding shelters near you. Or, if you live in Maine, Animal Shelters in Maine has information on rescue groups around the state.
If you already have a canine companion, why not treat him or her to a little something special today? These homemade frozen treats are a great option if it’s hot where you live. Or, why not give your pet a comfy new place to relax? All of our dog beds provide both support and comfort – and many ship free!
High bush blueberries at Libby & Son U-Picks
We can hardly believe August is already half over, so we’re eagerly indulging in as many summer activities as possible. (Lobster rolls for lunch AND dinner? Yes, please!) If you’re visiting Maine, or if you’re just trying to check things off your summer bucket list, we highly recommend fitting blueberry picking into your schedule. Looking for the perfect place to go? The Bangor Daily News has compiled a wonderful list of farms across the state where you can pick your own berries. Or, if you want to bring home a few more treats, like apples or raspberries, pickyourown.org has a handy chart outlining what fruits and vegetables are in season at any given date.
For more ideas about summer activities in Maine, visit our Maine places page. We’d also love to hear what you’re squeezing in before the summer ends – share with us in the comments section below!

With back-to-school time coming up next month, we thought it would be the perfect time to take a peek at some of the world’s most beautiful dorms. From a building with the country’s largest exterior climbing wall in the Netherlands to a dorm with a 125-seat theater at MIT, these residence halls get high marks for both aesthetics and amenities.
