Cuddledown’s manufacturing staff show their team spirit for the Red Sox in World Series 2013! You could say they are the Sox’ biggest fans!
This year’s 2013 Red Sox team has been growing their facial hair for good luck. At this year’s World Series, many fans are embracing the look!
Much like the comedy sketch “Put a Bird on it” from “Saturday Night Live” and “Portlandia” – we Red Sox fans liked the sentiment, but not so much the birds – so instead we “put a BEARD on it!” and rocked the random facial hair while cheering on the team!! Guess which beard is real?!
Here in New England, you may enjoy cheering on other baseball teams other than the Red Sox, but in general, you’re better off doing it quietly in the privacy of your own home!
Here in Maine, our own Sea Dogs team has hosted 17 0f the current 25 players on the Red Sox World Series 2013 team, so it’s pretty much a given that the staff members at Cuddledown are Sox fans (at least those who are willing to share!)
Our manufacturing team was proud to have made the pillows that ended up in the Red Sox players’ sleep room. We sure hope the players are getting some good sleep to win the Series this year! And of course in unity with the team, we’re sporting beards (well, ok, they’re not all real…!)
There are those who may attribute the Red Sox’ World Series appearance to the copious facial hair they are sporting, but perhaps the real secret is not what’s on their heads, but what’s under them!
A month ago, Red Sox President Larry Lucchino let the cat out of the bag that the players had a “sleep room” to be able to rest up between games. Thinking that any good sleep room wouldn’t be complete without some Cuddledown bedding, we sent along several of our luxurious pillows, as well as our customer favorite sateen pillowcases, custom monogrammed with “Go Red Sox!” Local sports reporter Dave Eid (WGME13) filmed the pillows being made.
So, is there a correlation between the comfy Cuddledown pillows and the wins? It’s a proven fact that better sleep equates good health – so we’d like to think that had something to do with this World Series appearance!
Either way, Maine has definitely had a hand in the Ws – according to the Portland Press Herald, the Sea Dogs’ (Portland’s double A team) general manager Geoff Iacuessa said 17 of the 25 Red Sox players had spent time in Portland, either as minor leaguers or major leaguers coming back from injury on rehab assignments.
Beards or “Sea Dogs”/Maine connection notwithstanding, we still think it was primarily due to the pillows! And we’re all rooting for that big World Series win!
As we continue to celebrate our 40th anniversary, our President and CEO Chris Bradley shares his thoughts on what inspired him to create our online Cuddledown “Factory Seconds” store.Cuddledown President and CEO Chris Bradley:
We recently launched a selection of “factory seconds” on our website, something that I have wanted to do for years. When I was a kid my mom would take us every summer to the Bass factory store in Wilton (west of Farmington, Maine) to buy our shoes for the year – a favorite destination for every New England value shopper. As kids, shopping for shoes in the middle of summer when we could be swimming was always a drag! The store clerk helping us saw 1, 2, 3, 4 sets of long skinny feet, and then one set of short and wide and said “hey, you’re not in this family!” He was right – it was my sister’s friend!
Factory outlets in those days were the real deal – nothing like the “outlet malls” that have spread all over the country, selling goods that are typically “de-engineered” versions of the top line, and not really a bargain. In those days a factory store sold merchandise made on-site at the factory, that didn’t quite measure-up to the brand’s quality standards. Rather than first quality, this class of goods was known as second quality, and it was often a challenge to spot the flaws.
Factory stores attracted a group of shoppers that would be hard-pressed to pay full price. These were the same folks that re-used aluminum foil, and stored bars of soap in their dresser drawers so it would harden in the air and last longer – oh, they had the money to pay full retail, but it just wasn’t in their nature. My mother referred to this frugality as being “Scotch.” My hope is that our selection of factory seconds will attract a group of shoppers that appreciate Cuddledown’s long lasting quality, and do not mind a few flaws if they feel that they are getting a great price!
Team Orange Dragons Against Cancer has done it again! Final results won’t be in until after this weekends’ Dempsey Challenge – but this team (founded by former long-time Cuddledown employee Nina Brown) not only exceeded their fundraising goal of $10,000, but also were in the top ten largest groups participating! Several Cuddledown employees helped fundraise and/or will be participating in this weekend’s events, walking, running or riding!
The Dempsey Challenge raises money to help fund The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in Lewiston, Maine, founded by actor Patrick Dempsey of Grey’s Anatomy fame. Dempsey himself attends the annual event (including riding in the biking portion of the event). At last year’s event, Nina was able to meet “McDreamy” up close and in person, and she said he was extremely kind and empathetic, speaking with survivors and family members of those who have suffered the scourge of cancer.
With 40 years of US manufacturing, Cuddledown is proud to celebrate Manufacturing Day today! We make all of our fine quality bedding – cozy comforters, fluffy pillows, and comfy featherbeds and mattress pads right here in Yarmouth, Maine – a state known for a long history of textile manufacturing.
100 years ago, there wouldn’t have been a need perhaps, but with so many US-based factories moving abroad or industries simply going away (is anyone still manufacturing 8-track tape players, slide projectors, rotary telephones?) it’s good to celebrate industries that are thriving or making a return!
If you love organic cotton, you’ll love our Cuddledown organic cotton percale sheets! Best of all, they’re 40% off for 40 hours, so get them now to enjoy a great night’s sleep.

You’ll not only enjoy the crisp, lightweight feel of these Cuddledown organic percale sheets, but will sleep well knowing that they are safe for you and your family, as well as the environment.
But don’t miss out, the clock’s ticking!
Did you ever feel like you couldn’t make it through the work day without a gallon of coffee? Start head bobbing during an excruciatingly long meeting? Well imagine how hard it’d be to stay awake if you worked at Cuddledown, a company known for our luxuriously cozy bedding?
Unlike the Red Sox, who recently let slip the news that their clubhouse now features a nap room, Cuddledown’s employees don’t have a nap room (yet…?). However, these intrepid nap-seekers are not at a loss for finding a comfy spot – from the kitchen to the office furniture, to the down bales, and even on a bed for a photo shoot!
With studies showing that short naps can energize employees to be more productive, it’s no wonder a team like the Red Sox would embrace the philosophy that naps are no longer just for toddlers! Prominent companies such as Nike, Google, Proctor and Gamble and the Huffington Post (recently featured on the Today Show) all provide special nap rooms for their employees. Ariana Huffington said, “Even a 20-minute nap in the middle of the day can make a huge difference. I grew up thinking that if you work around the clock, you are going to be more effective, and I realize that is not true.’’
As more studies continue to evaluate the benefits of daytime naps, researchers are finding that these so called “power naps” can help boost brain power for problem solving, increase reaction times (especially important for airline pilots or ER docs), improve people’s moods and stress levels, as well as have a positive impact on health issues such as heart disease, high blood pressure and even weight management.
And finally, although Cuddledown has yet to create an official nap room, that doesn’t mean we don’t embrace the idea. We recently sent several heavenly soft pillows and custom-monogrammed, 100% cotton sateen pillowcases to the Red Sox in hopes that they’ll help the team to be well-rested for a World Series victory!
As if sea otters weren’t overwhelmingly cute enough, turns out, their practical method of napping in the water is beyond adorable!
True to their name, sea otters make their home … well… in the sea! They even sleep there! They’re able to keep warm in freezing cold water because of their incredibly dense fur – up to a million hairs per square inch, which traps a layer of air against the otter’s skin.
When it’s nap time, the sea otters simply float on the water’s surface, often in duos or groups. They sometimes wrap themselves up in seaweed growing from the ocean’s floor, or, as shown in this video, clasp paws to keep from drifting off! We would agree that snuggling is a great way to nap securely!

Anyone over the age of 40 probably remembers this song from vintage 1970s Sesame Street – “Everybody Sleeps!” Since we’re in the sleep business it has special meaning for us of course, and we thought we’d share some fun on this Flashback Friday!
August is here already? But (you’re no doubt saying) summer’s just begun?! Back to school can’t be happening in a few weeks!!?? This month, our Cuddledown First Friday Sale features the perfect bedding for student to take to college, a brightly colored, oversized, quilted blanket – great for any temperature, and easy care – just toss it in the wash! And since it’s oversized, the Twin will fit those Twin XL dorm beds (or use the full size for even more coverage!) Or brighten the décor in your own bedroom, or your family room or living room, as it comes in a Throw size as well.
Our quilted blankets or throws are made from smooth 350 thread count, 100% combed cotton percale and filled with hypoallergenic synthetic fill that lofts and clusters just like down! And the colors coordinate with our 350 thread count percale sheeting. The blanket is generously oversized, so you can easily tuck the sides under your mattress.
But don’t wait, this blanket is now 40% off – but only for 40 hours!
Dorm rooms haven’t changed all that much from the 1970s when Cuddledown was founded until now. Some dorms today may look more like a high-end hotel suite, and of course, students come with a wide array of technology, from iPads to flat screen TVs, and some dorms even allow coed rooms (yes, men and women sharing the same room!). But the essentials are still the same. From the hard and narrow twin-size dorm room beds, to the annoying loud parties next door (of course you never joined in!), to the roomies snoring, watching TV, or inviting friends in late at night, it’s amazing college students can even function by noon, much less get up for an early morning class.
There’s a growing awareness on college campuses that sleep plays a huge part in a student’s success at college, but only a few are acknowledging it, or providing education on the topic. In a 2012 article on the impact of sleep on college students by the Washington Times, a health official at the University of Arizona stated that the average student is functioning with a clinical sleep disorder, averaging about 6.5 hours per night (an amount they say is over-reported, so the actual number is probably lower). And a University of Delaware psychologist said that students who think they have attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder often are just sleep-deprived, and that improving sleep is a far better option than taking medications.
One very simple way for college students to get more sleep is to create a better sleep environment. That can include earplugs to avoid all the noise in a typical dorm. And another is to avoid early morning classes! But the best way to get a good night’s sleep is to make your student’s dorm bed into a heavenly nest with perfectly comfy bedding. And where could one find such a thing? Why Cuddledown of course! Keep your student happy and well-rested with our collection of comfy college bedding, including sheets, comforters, mattress pads and more in Twin or Twin XL sizes, as well as our student bedding protection kit to protect from dust mites, bedbugs and other nasties!
