The Bedding Snob

Cultivating relaxation need not leave you starving for style …

Snobbish Thoughts June 2009

Do you dream in green?

Spring has sprung and all things in nature are going green. Why not help the green outside by going green inside your bedroom? Good idea! Now you’re pumped about helping the planet while you sleep. But, what if the bedding you buy is a green wash? How do you know that you’re not just another victim of an enviro-hoax? And how much “green” does it cost to go green? Well, here’s a little crash course on my new favorite color.

In your quest for bedding a la green, first look for certifications that other people have actually heard of. Cuddledown uses Oeko-Tex to certify their eco-friendly products and GOTS to certify their organic products.

Oeko-Tex is a European certification that tests the fabric right from the package for harmful chemicals and toxins. Now used all over the world, Oeko-Tex is very common and ensures that no matter where the fabric is from, you and your family can rest easy knowing substances that have no business being in your bedding (aka: lead, mercury, formaldehyde) aren’t. What’s also pretty great is that when you’re done with your eco-friendly/Oeko-Tex certified bedding, none of these chemicals will be released back into the environment.

GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard and is the most recognized textile organic certification in the world. What does it mean for a textile to be organic? GOTS ensures that no pesticides or harmful chemicals are used in the growth, manufacture, and dying processes of the fabric. It even goes so far as to make sure that the workers are treated fairly and waste is disposed of properly.

And how much extra can you expect to pay for these certifications and the peace of mind knowing that you’re taking your carbon footprint down a size? Well, if you shop Cuddledown… nothing. All of Cuddledown’s organic and eco-friendly bedding is either priced the same or even lower than non-certified bedding. So next time you shop bedding… why not shop a shade of green?
